Heavy Highway and Bridge Construction

Reconstruction of Route 2 over Route 2A – Phillipston, MA

The first “heavy lift” project performed for MassDOT’s Accelerated Bridge Program was completed with great success in the Summer/Fall of 2010. In order to minimize the impacts to the traveling public and reduce overall construction time, SPS using accelerated construction techniques and state of the art heavy lift equipment, replaced the heavily traveled 4-lane bridge Route 2 Bridge superstructure in a mere 121 hours. This was accomplished by constructing the replacement superstructure on temporary abutments approximately 100 feet away from Route 2 and during a 5 day period in which Route 2 was detoured onto local roads, demolishing the existing Route 2 superstructure, rolling the 300 ton replacement superstructure into place with 2 Goldhofer Self Propelled Modular Transporters, and installing pavement, a lane separator system down the median and line striping to open Route 2 to back to traffic.

SPS received numerous awards for the innovative design and construction techniques used, including the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts 2011 Gold Award for Professional Design Excellence, the Construction Management Association of America, New England Chapter’s Infrastructure Project of the Year Award (under $10M), the Women in Transportation Seminar Massachusetts Chapter’s Innovative Solutions Award, and the American Public Works Association Project of the Year Award in the Transportation Less than $5M category.
