Reconstruction of Route 2 Eastbound and Westbound over Route 140
Westminster, MA
Currently in the second phase of construction, SPS is diligently working to complete the replacement of two 50 year old bridges each 190 feet long, carrying Route 2 eastbound and westbound over Route 140 (West Main Street) in Westminster, MA. The project consists of constructing new twin three-span steel stinger bridges while maintaining 2 lanes of traffic in each direction on Route 2.
Setting this project apart from many others is the Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) developed by SPS in the early stages of the project. The VECP modified the original scope of work by reducing the 3 Phase construction sequence to 2 Phases, saving the Commonwealth both time and money. The project, now expected to finish 1 year ahead of schedule, will include wider bridges to accommodate future Route 2 expansion, preservation of approximately six acres of existing median and vegetated wetlands, and elimination of an extensive temporary roadway.
This project also includes installation of two unique ground improvement techniques, Stone Columns and Compaction Grout Columns. Over 900 individual, 30 foot deep columns will be installed to stabilize the soil underneath the bridge over an area equal to one acre of land.
