Hyde Park project finished more than one year ahead of schedule

Sprague Street Bridge in Hyde Park MAHYDE PARK - Commuters between Boston and Route 128 breathed a collective sigh of relief when a heavily traveled bridge reopened a year early.

The Sprague Street bridge in Hyde Park which spans three sets of railroad tracks was closed to traffic in January 2007. SPS New England crews worked extended hours and weekends to complete the $8 million MassHighway project a year ahead of schedule. Demolition of the existing structure and complete replacement of the bridge was completed on December 30, 2007. Although the bridge reopened to traffic on a Sunday, word quickly got out to drivers.

“It didn’t take people long to figure it out,” said Mark Pelletier, project manager for SPS New England, adding that approximately 9,300 cars and trucks travel the bridge every day.
